Literacy remains at the forefront of Southern California McDonald’s education initiatives. In conjunction with the National Center for Family Literacy, Southern California McDonald’s restaurants help families improve their chances of success in school, on the job and throughout their lives by increasing literacy levels through the following initiatives:

Family Mealtime Literacy Nights

Comprised of five, 90-minute weekly interactive sessions, Family Mealtime Literacy Nights bring preschool aged children and their parents together during dinnertime to learn and support each other in efforts to improve their reading, writing and thinking skills. These courses are provided at McDonald’s restaurants throughout Southern California and taught, in both English and Spanish, by trainers from the National Center for Family Literacy. Each week covers a different topic: phonological awareness, math, reading, science and storytelling. Studies have shown that family mealtime contributes to children’s vocabulary and early literacy skills and the key to long-term academic success.

The Power of Moms

As children's first teachers, mothers play an important role in early literacy education.  To help provide mother's with information and tools to help develop their children's learning and literacy skills Southern California McDonald's is hosting in-store "Coffee Chats."  Topics discussed include making your home a literacy-rich environment and activities parents can do everyday to help children learn to read.
